Abstract: The author first highlights the rationale of copyright collective licensing as well as the different types of collective licenses (i.e. blanket, transactional, extended, multi-repertoire). He then analyses (i) the case law from the European Court of Justice regarding the relationship between collecting societies and commercial users and (ii) the recent EU initiatives in the on-line music field aimed at encouraging more Community-wide collective licensing.
